Missouri Requires All Drivers to Have Auto Insurance

If you are registering a vehicle and driving it in Missouri, you are required to have at least the minimum auto insurance required by the state:

  • $25,000 per person for bodily injury
  • $50,000 per accident for bodily injury
  • $10,000 per accident for property

This covers you in the event you are at fault in an accident and pays for injuries to other motorists or their passengers. It also covers other drivers’ personal property damaged in an accident, such as their vehicle or property within the vehicle, as well as damage to things like landscaping or fencing.

We Recommend Coverage Beyond the State Minimum

At Clayton  Hanley Insurance we encourage our clients in St. Louis to carry more than just the required state minimum for auto insurance. We suggest upping your liability protection, so in the event of a serious accident, you won’t have to dip into your personal savings if you reach the limits of your auto policy coverage. This is particularly smart if you have a new or young driver in the household.

We also recommend adding collision and comprehensive insurance in addition to liability coverage. If you are financing the purchase of a vehicle, comprehensive and collision coverage may in fact be mandatory.

Collision insurance covers your vehicle if you are at fault in an accident or if the party at fault has no insurance. It lets you get repairs done quickly, so your life goes on with minimal disruption. If you rely on your car for work transportation, to get to school, or for family activities and errands, you’ll find collision coverage a real lifesaver. If you only have liability insurance, you would have to pay for the repair or replacement of your vehicle out of your own pocket.

Comprehensive auto insurance covers your car or truck in the event of theft or vandalism. It also pays for repair or replacement if your vehicle is damaged or lost to fire, storms, or any natural disasters.

In Missouri, you should add your teenager to your auto insurance policy as soon as they obtain their driver's license (Some states may require you to add them to your policy when they obtain a learner’s permit). If they have a learner’s permit, it's a good idea to inform your insurance company, as some policies may already provide coverage for permitted drivers under the parent's insurance.

Be sure to let us know when your child starts learning to drive and we'll go over the insurance implications with you and let you know what you need to do and when.

Ask us! We love finding every last discount possible to save you money on your insurance.

Your college student might still be covered by your home insurance policy if they are living in on-campus housing and are listed as dependents on your policy. This generally extends personal property and liability coverage to them while they are away at school.  Coverage limits might be lower for belongings kept at a secondary location like a dorm

However, if they are living off-campus, you might need to get a separate renters insurance policy for them.

If they take their car to another state for college, they are typically still covered by your auto insurance policy. Most auto insurance policies offer nationwide coverage, which means the policy extends to all states.

If you have a child currently attending college or headed off to their first year in the fall, let us know and we'll go over how your policy applies and what additional coverage you should consider.

Rentals are covered like it is your own car. Rental companies offer additional coverage, which would help pay for deductibles and downtime on the car in the event there is a claim. That portion would not be covered by your car insurance.  Enjoy your trip!

RideSharing Coverage is for drivers who work for a hailing company such as Uber, Lyft or DoorDash, etc and drive their personal vehicles.

Ride Hailing company is also known as Transportation Network Corporation (TNC). RideSharing coverage can be added to your personal auto insurance policy.
